I recently updated a Windows Server 2019 box functioning as a Hyper-V Hypervisor. Following the update process, the server encountered an issue during the shutdown, specifically at the “Shutting down service: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management.” It remained in this state for an extended period, prompting me to manually restart the server (admittedly not the best decision).
The machine got stuck at the Windows symbol with the loading spinner after rebooting. Subsequent restarts revealed various issues, including the operating system failing to boot. To address this, I removed a disk as a software mirror for the boot drive within my RAID array. This action seemed to revive the machine temporarily as it booted up and initiated “Working on updates” processes.
However, it is again stuck at the “Shutting down service: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management” stage.
I’m uncertain about the best course of action in this situation. Should I wait for it to resolve itself or consider a forced restart?
